 This is a non-guided fly-in drop hunt for Caribou departing from Happy Valley located 80 road miles south of Deadhorse along side the Dalton Highway.
As everyone knows Caribou are constantly on the move. Bush flights for this drop hunt are limited to no more than 100 miles range from Happy Valley. A typical group size is 2 but up to 6 can be easily managed. Most people find that they have a good hunt with 5 to 7 hunting days.
In the early part of the season there will be 24 hours of daylight with temperatures normally ranging from 50 to 75 with morning fog common and occasional rain showers. Bugs can be a nuisance and don't forget your sun screen. By mid-August the daylight hours are down to about 14 a day, the bugs are disappearing and the temperatures will be reaching the freezing point on clear nights. Hunters are not required to wear orange and may use rifles, muzzle loaders or bow. There is very little cell phone coverage except in the immediate area around Deadhorse.

Hunting License- $85.00
Caribou Tags- $325.00 each tag ( limit of 2 tags, bull only)
Optional Wolf Tags- $30.00 each tag (limit of 5 tags)
Optional 7/day fishing license- $30.00
Donating meat is an option; however the cost is usually equivalent to taking the meat home...about $1.50 per pound.
Shipping of Antlers is a variable (from $50.00 to $350.00) depending on the numbers of antlers being shipped and whether they are going direct to your local taxidermist or only to Anchorage for expediting. |
